The importance of school libraries is well known. They play a vital role in education and learning. They promote self ? such and reading habits. Without libraries educational aims cannot be achieved. There are a librarian, one assistant librarian and tow helpers. They are always busy in their work. Then there are newspapers, magazines and periodicals.

These books are on many subjects. They are on science mathematics, literature, language, business, commerce, computers, geography, history, arts, crafts etc. we can borrow books for a week at a time. The librarian helps us to select, local and borrow the books. When a book is already on loan, it can be reserved. There is fine on late return or spoiling a book. Once in a week there is a library period for every section of the class. It helps us to develop reading habits. It also encourages self ? study and self ? reliance. We are taken to the book exhibitions and fairs and helped in purchasing good and useful books.

There is a special ?Library Prize? of Rs. 1000 and a set of selected books. It is given annually to the student who makes the best use of the library in the year. The best library user is selected on the basis of the number of books borrowed and used. There si on oral test on the basis of the books borrowed and read. In examination days, the library is kept open on Sundays and other holidays. Many students come there and study for the whole day in a very healthy atmosphere. They can bring books from home as well for study. No body is aloud to talk or to speak loudly in the library. For the teachers there is a special arrangement. They come here in their vacant periods and enjoy reading. They can be issued 3 books at a time for a period of one month. The principal often pays surprise visits to see and supervise that everything in the library is okay.

Our school library is a big source of our knowledge, hope and inspiration. It widens our horizon of knowledge and thinking. We are proud of our school library.

MY AMBITION IN LIFE Man is an ambitious being. Every man and woman has some ambition. Without an ambition life becomes purposeless, dull and boring. Ambition makes a person active, live and hard working. It inspires a man or woman to have the goal at the earliest. A person without ambition cannot rise in life. He will be a victim of indecision. However, over-ambition but not to match it with hard work, strong will and perseverance.

I am a young boy of 16 years. I am ambitious. For the youth of the country even the sky is not the limit. They can achieve anything they want. They are full of so much energy, courage and enthusiasm. They have all the possibilities. The opportunities before them are endless. But they have to decide wisely and then work hard and continuously to achieve that goal.

My ambition is to have wings to fly fast like an eagle in the skies. I want to become a pilot in the Indian Air Force. I want to serve my motherland in that capacity. Our country is very vast. Its area, borders and coastline are extensive. They need a vast and very efficient air defence system. Air Force plays a vital role in a country?s defence system.

After completion of my studies, I want to join the Indian Air Force and become a pilot of a fighter aero plane. The career in Air Force is so thrilling, adventurous and inspiring. It is also full of great responsibilities and risks. It demands great alertness quick and right capacity to judge. Physical fitness of the top order is also essential for a pilot in the Indian Air Force. The training is long and difficult. It needs much endurance, patience and perseverance. I think I have all these in a good measure. With the passage of time, they will grow further and ripen. I am already a cadet in the Air wing of the NCC and am doing perfectly well. My NCC instructors and officers are well satisfied with my training. They inspire me and hope to see me as an Air Force pilot in future. This training and instruction as cadet will help me a lot in my future course of becoming a pilot.

Our Air Force has a long and outstanding tradition of bravery. It has many matchless records both during wars and peace. I will like to be a part of it and to add something to it. Machines are important. But men are more important. This has been proved time and again by our pilots and airmen. During the past two conflicts with Pakistan, Indian Air Force did exceedingly well to defeat the enemy.

The striking power of the Indian Air Force is vast, long, penetrating and very precise. It is one of the greatest air forces in the world.

It has been modernized and upgraded from time to time. The recent purchase of Russion Sukhoi fighter aircrafts has further strengthened our air striking power. Moreover, we are developing our own 8 tonne most advanced multipurpose combat aircraft called Light Combat Aricraft ( LCA ).

I shall leave no stone unturned to achieve my ambition. I am ready to make any sacrifice for it. I know that god helps those who help themselves. Therefore, I am confident to achieve my goal soon as a dedicated air ? pilot. As a senior cadet of the Air wing of NCC, I shall soon have the first taste of flying in a training aircraft. But ultimately I look forward to fly at a very high altitude at a supersonic speed in a MIG, Mirage or Jaguar. I have no doubt that one day my dream will come true. Then my ambition to fly these wonderful machines will be fulfilled. My father has been of great help and inspiration in deciding fro this career. His guidance has been and asset to me.

Rains are always welcome in India. They are awaited eagerly by all. Sometimes there are flood in some parts of the country. They expected rains a lot of harm. It was already the 15th day of July. The expected rains had not arrived. The onset of rainy season was delayed by a couple of weeks. People were feeling very uneasy and anxious. People often discussed rains and weather. They often looked at the rain- bearing clouds. The farmers prayed for the clouds and rains. It was sultry, humid and very unpleasant. The school gad already opened after long summer vacation. But the students could not pay attention to their lessons because of hot humid weather. The fans did not provide any comfort. The relief was long overdue form hot season.
Then one day, suddenly the sky was overcast with dark and large clouds in the north. Before it there was a short dust- storm. It brought down the temperature and people heaved a sigh of relief. But real relief was yet to come. There were thunder and lightning. The rumblings in the skies delighted the expectant hearts. Then it started raining. The drizzle soon changed into downpour. People were taken unawares but they all were happy and cheerful on the onset of the monsoon.
I was returning home from school. I had neither an umbrella nor a rain-coat. I rushed for shelter in a nearby showroom of readymade garments. A salesman in the showroom was known to me. I was fairly drenched. The man offered me a towel to wipe off the rain water and then offered a comfortable seat. I thanked him for the help.
It rained very heavily and continuously for 30 minutes. All the roads, streets and markets were overflowing with water. For sometime, the traffic came to a stand still. At some places there was knee deep water. The Municipal authorities were caught unawares. There was water-logging. The drains had chocked at many places. There was water and water every where.
Soon the children came out and started enjoying in the flowing rain water. They were boys and girls between three and 10 years of age. Some were quite naked; the others half naked. They splashed water on one another, swam, jumped and frolicked. They shouted with joy and ran after one another in sheer glee. They had all sorts of fun and frolic. Some small children enjoyed floating paper-boats.
When the rain had stopped I came out of the shop and went home. The roads had become dirty, muddy and slippery. One had to walk with caution. I reached home, took off my soggy shoes and socks and changed my cloths. I took a chair and sat down in it comfortably in the balcony. My mother offered me a cup of hot tea and some snacks. I enjoyed the refreshment looking out on the scene.
It was all comfortable and soothing after long hot summer. The temperature had come down considerably. The cool breeze was blowing. Even the animals and birds were very happy. They showed it in various ways. In the evening there were more rains. At night the croaking of the frogs could be heard. At long last, the rain god was pleased to send clouds. They were all laden with water and water, the life-giving liquid.

A VISIT TO AN EXHIBITIONA visit to an exhibition is very educative. We learn so many things from the exhibits displayed there. It is also a source of much delight and entertainment. I am fond of visiting exhibitions whenever they are there and I have time to spare. Exhibition can be of many types. It may be industrial, consumer, flower exhibition, book exhibition, exhibition on textiles, fashions, computers, food and agriculture.

Recently I visited the 23rd India International Trade Fair and Exhibition 2003. It was held at the famous and sprawling Pragati Maidan from 14th November to 27th November. My mother, my younger sister and I myself went to the fair and exhibition. It was Sunday and very pleasant. The sky was clear and bright with pleasant sun-shine. The cool breeze was blowing. We reached the exhibition ground by a three wheeler scooter at gate No.1. There was a huge crowd at the gate. I joined the long queue and after half an hour I bought three entry tickets. By that time it was 11O?clock.

There were pavilions and pavilions. Pavilions of all the Indian states. There were railway and defence pavilions. Then there were foreign besides scores of industrial pavilions. They were of many sizes and all sorts of goods, machines and products were on show and sale. The fair had brought the buyers were on a common platform on a vast scale. My mother was specially interested in having as good look at consumer items products. She was interested in new and innovative items.

We entered the Hall No.2 and there were all kinds of food and health- care products and items. All the stalls were crowded and the business was very brisk. My mother bought some honey, saffron and ayurvedic tonic for papa. The Hall No.1 had footwere, handicrafts and home furnishings. My mother wanted to buy some curtain but it was postponed for the next visit when she will come again with papa the next week.

By then we wanted to have some refreshments and so went to a food- stall. There we enjoyed hot coffee and snacks and basked in the sun on the lush green lawn. Next, we visited Hall No.3 and 4. In the Hall No.3 were all types of garments- silken, woolen, cotton, woven etc. all so colorful, rich, and inviting. My sister bought a woolen pullover with a beautiful flower design. In the Hall No. 4 were jewellery items. They dazed the beholders with their variety, prize, dazzle and display in the bright electric lights. There were silver, gold and imitation jewellery; plain items with intricate designs and inlaid with precious and semi-precious stones.

Next we visited the state pavilions. They included those of Rajasthan, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh. The Rajasthan pavilion attracted us the most. It stood like a big pink royal mansion with big arches and lattice work. Its huge Rajput style domes added to its beauty and fascination. At the entrance Rajasthani folk music was being played on typical instruments. The pavilion consisted of two floors. They were full of many beautiful items and creations. These included marble, artware, tie- dye sarees, readymade garments, jewellery, paintings, toys, Rajasthani quilts lac articles, mirror- work, blu pottery etc. I bought a pair of blue pottery vases for friend. There were many irresistible items.

We also visited the technology exports and techmart pavilions, but my mother did not take much interest in these. And so we just hurried through. Then we relaxed on the lawn near the big blue lake full of clear water. In the middle of the lake fountains played merrily. On the public address system was being played soft instrumental music. The lilting, liquid music soothed my mother to a short refreshing nap. In the meanwhile;e we enjoyed icecreams. Then we visited India?s vision Hall. The fair and exhibition gave a good view of the country?s progress since India?s independence in 1947.

We returned home late in the evening. The visit was very entertaining and refreshing. In the exhibition there was an atmosphere of festivity and celebration. Their were huge crowds enjoying themselves. It looked as if the whole city had collected there. I had collected a lot of literature during our rounds. This literature had a wealth of information on many subjects of the country. I shall ever remember this exhibition as a grand visual record of 50 years of independence of India. But I felt our single visit was not sufficient to cover even half the pavilions and stalls.

A School is a big institution full of activities. It is also like a very big family in which many functions are held. In my school a number of functions are observed every year. Annual prize distribution is one of them. It is a very colorful, enjoyable and inspiring occasion.

This year it was held on 23rd of February. It was also the foundation day of our school. Long and great preparations were made for the day. The school building was given a fresh coat of whitewash. The furniture etc. were all painted a new. The name plates, signboards etc. Were-re-written and painted. New flower-plants in pots were added and there was lot of decoration. There were flower garlands, big gates, festoons, buntings and balloons. Every nook and corner was spruced. Invitation cards in bright blue letters were printed and sent to the invitees.

The director of Education was the Chief Guest. He presided over the function. He was received at the main gate by the principal and the staff members. He was garlanded and tilak was applied on his forehead by two senior girl students. Then he was escorted to the stage and offered a high and comfortable seat. The other guests and invitees were already in their seats.

The main function began with the singing of the national anthem. A group of girls sang it to the accompaniment of the sweet music. Then the principal introduced the chief guest and delivered a short welcome speech. Then was read the school annual report. It highlighted the achievements of the school during the year. In between there were loud clapping.

The chief guest then distributed the prizes. The prizes were given for remarkable performance in studies, games and sports and other extra-curricular activities. There were cups, trophies, books medals, tea-shirts and certificates in prizes. There were prizes for best individual and team efforts. As each and every winner got his or hser prize, the gathering loudly cheered and clapped. The chief guest shook hand with every one of them. In the end the chief guest delivered his address. He urged the students to do still better next year. He thanked the principal, the staff-members and the students for organizing such a successful and grand function. He was glad to be received with so much warmth, respect and hospitality. Then the vice principal thanked him and other guests for all the trouble they took in coming to the function. It was followed by singing of Vande Matram by a group of boy students.

The function came to an end with a tea-party. There were sweets, snacks, tea, coffee and cold drinks. The chief guest was served by a couple of senior girl students. The other guests were served by other girl students. After that we all dispersed with much satisfaction because the function was a grand success. The next day was declared a holiday. It further added to our joy and happiness.

An Indian marriage is always a special occasion. It is an affair to be enjoyed and celebrated. A Hindu marriage is an elaborate social function and ceremony. These rituals are performed before the marriage songs and music. Special prayer and sweets are offered to lord Ganesha, the god of success and happiness. But now things are becoming more simple and easy.

The bridegroom comes to the house of the bride riding a decorated mare. He is dressed like a prince and wears a sehra, a kind of crown. He also carries a sword in his hand. A big band plays before him and a large group of baratis follow him. The marriage procession passes through main bazaar and streets. On the way to the bride?s house there is a lot of dancing, singing and fire ? works.

The actual marriage ceremony takes place at night in the presence of all the guests and hosts. The priest recites mantras from the holy scriptures. The couple is made to have seven rounds of the sacred fire. They take vow to be faithful to each other in the presence of the holy fire and all the people. Finally, the couple joins hands amidst chanting of mantras and blessings. India marriage solemnizes union of tow hearts and two families. It means a new alliance and friendship between two families and social groups. Socially, it is very important occasion. It marks a milestone in an individual?s life. It is also marked by very expensive and impressive feast. The quests enjoy many types of sweets and other dishes specially prepared for the occasion.

The bride wears costly costume specially prepared for her. In her bridal finery and ornaments, she looks like a princess. But giving and taking of dowry on this occasion is an evil custom. This evil custom should be checked and eradicated. It is shameful blot on the fair name of Indian marriage and society. Otherwise it is very social, religious marriage and society. Life is very interesting and wonderful. There are numberless beautiful and attractive things. They make life interesting, meaningful and attractive. But there are many things also which are ugly and annoying. Thus, life is a mixed affair. It is full of sweet, enjoyable and beautiful things. At the same time there are sufferings, diseases, troubles and tears. There are many things I like and many others which I dislike and hate. The five things I like most are as under:

I love reading. It is my hobby. I have a good collection of books. But I like short novels, story books, biographies and books on nature. They give me great delight. I enjoy their company and feel they are my best friends. They increase my knowledge and skills of language. I never fell sad, lonely or bored because of them.

The next thing I like most is nature-study. I love nature from the core of my heart. Nature is so rich in variety, beauty and interest. I often sit in our small garden and observe nature. The twittering of birds, the flight of butterflies, the rustling of the leaves, the fragrance and colour of flowers; the squirrels so playful, the deep blue sky, the glorious sunrise and sun-set etc., cast a spell on me. I feel part of the nature. I also go for a walk in the early morning in the nearby park and enjoy nature there. Last year I went to Nainital, and enjoyed myself amidst nature to the full. Nature inspires me with hope, courage, and dedication to work. I also love watching the stars at night. They are too far and yet so close to my heart.

The third thing I like most is talking with friends. I have some very good friends. We are intimate with one another. In spare time we collect at a common place and enjoy talking. We discuss many things, tell stories, anecdotes and have a lot of books, reading, nature-study, human nature, news and films. The exchange of ideas, views and news help us a lot in increasing our knowledge.

The fourth thing I love most is the children. I play with them whenever I have an opportunity. The little children with their very innocent and beautiful faces are most attractive things on the earth. In the neighborhood there are many children. Sometimes, I play with them, tell them fairy tales and recite rhymes. It also pleases me to watch them play. Their small activities are so wonderful and interesting. It pains me a lot when I see a child in trouble or weeping.

The last but not the least, I love eating sweets. I have a sweet tooth. Milk sweets are my favorite. I also like chocolates and toffees. I keep them in my pockets and also distribute them among friends and children. My mother prepares special sweet dishes for me. There is hardly a day when there are no sweets in the house. I think I have inherited this habit. My father also loves sweets so much. But my mother prefers napkins and snacks. In winter it gives me much delight to eat peanuts with jiggery. In summer I often like to enjoy sugar-candy and ice creams of quality. But I am conscious of my habit and never allow it to overpower me. I can do even without them.

News papers play and important role in our life. They form an integral part of our everyday life. People never miss them. Reading newspapers is the first activity in the morning with most of the educated people. Reading newspaper has become a regular habit with the people. I have enjoyed reading many kinds of books, but the Ramayana of Valmiki is my favourite book. The original Ramayana is in Sanskrit. I have a Hindi translation. It was presented to me by my father on my 10th birthday with some other gifts. Since then I have read the book many times over.

Every time I read Ramayana, I find a new meaning. Really it is a gold mine in morals and practical wisdom. It is an epic poem and deals with the life of Rama and Sita. Rama is the prince of Ayodhya. His charater, conduct and work inspire millions and millions of people in India and abroad. He is ideal son, prince, brother, husband, friend, king and ruler. He is exceptionally brave, gentle, attractive and friendly to all. His mission is to help the weak, the poor and the humble. He punishes the wicked and evil persons like Ravana, Kummbhkarna, Meghanad and others. His victory over Ravana symbolizes the triumph of good over evil.

The famous festival Dussehra is celebrated in the memory of Rama?s Victory over Ravana, the demon King of Lanka. Ravana had abducted Sita and refused to return her. Rama tried his best or make Ravana see reason. But evil ? minded Ravana was too proud to understand reason. Therefore, war became necessity and Ravana was defeated and killed with his while tribe.

Rama befriended with such humble and forest beings as monkeys, bears and Vultures. He also forged friendship with low caste people like fishermen, boatmen and tribals. He protected the rishis, hermits and ascetics from the tyranny of Rakshasas. Mahtma Gandhi was so much influenced by the Ramayana that he wanted to have Rama ? rajya in India. Rama, as a king, was famous for his high sense of justice and equality. Perfect peace and harmony prevailed in his kingdom. People were honest, truthful and religious by nature. They were all, men and women of high and strong character and morals.

Personally, Ramayana has somany lessons to teach me. It teaches me to be brave, humble, honest, thankful and a lad of strong moral character. In inspires me to have a strong sense of duty and fair play. It teaches me how to be respectful towards parents, teachers and elders. Bharat and Lakshman are ideal brothers, Sugriva and ideal Indian woman, on ideal to be followed by each and every woman. Our politicians and political leaders should take lesions from the life of Raja Rama and serve the country in the true spirit of service and devotion.

Many of the evils of our present day life can be removed by the study of this epic. It offers solutions to so many of our problems. It is an epic not only of the Hindus, but of the entire humanity. It has influenced me deeply. I treat it a s my best friend. I remember the story and its incident by heart. Really, it is my favourite book.
